A story – walk with Asha through the fog, the forest, and a warm red bean sweet
Welcome to Aoba-an
A house of quiet purpose on the coast of Takahama
Our work here at Aoba-an is to live simply and attentively — to walk, build, and create as practice. Everything we do, from tending the garden to sharing tea or conversation, is part of that same rhythm of awareness.
This place is both a retreat and a workshop — a living field where reflection meets community. We host gatherings, mentorships, and creative residencies; we build gardens, share meals, and open the doors for festivals, music, and dialogue. Whether you come as a guest, a collaborator, or a neighbor, you are part of this shared work of renewal.
What we build — retreats, the Kura Campus / Café, the stories of Takahama — are not just projects, but ways of remembering what matters: presence, connection, and quiet joy.
Here, we believe meaning is made through action — through listening, serving, and creating together.
Welcome to Aoba-an — may this place remind you to slow down, breathe deeply, and meet life as it is.

We’re truly grateful for the unique accommodation and meaningful experiences you provided. The retreat had a profound impact on our members and shifted their mindsets in a powerful way. We’ll carry this momentum forward as we continue building the Doshisha Innovation Community.”

I’ve been registered with Airbnb for nine years and have stayed at many different places, but this was the best place, the best experience, and the best host I’ve ever met. I had planned to stay one night, but ended up staying two in a row to fully enjoy it all.

I stayed at Aoba-an Retreat recently and it honestly exceeded every expectation. From the moment I arrived, there was this calm, welcoming energy — like stepping into a different world. Aoba-an isn’t just a stay — it’s an experience that stays with you.

A story – walk with Asha through the fog, the forest, and a warm red bean sweet

The sea of Takahama carries old memories ― ancient ties and travelers. A Winter with Tomoko & Liam, lime and charcoal nights. Sea and mountain speak of return.

Men of the Sea explores the raw energy and untamed spirit of the Wakasa festival — through drumming, fire, and the stories of those who carry it.
